Dhaka: The West Indies cricket team is currently touring Bangladesh, and head coach Darren Sammy has made it clear that his goal is to win both Test matches. Sammy said that if the team succeeds in beating Bangladesh, it will give the players an opportunity for extra earnings, as match fees and performance-based payments also increase with wins. He also said the team's aim is to reach at least the top five in the World Test Championship table, and beating Bangladesh in both matches would be a big step in that direction. Speaking to reporters, Sammy said the way the players reacted to recent pay cuts reflects the spirit and hunger within the team. He believes that the performance the team showed in the limited-overs series against India will now be reflected in Test cricket as well. However, statistically, West Indies won only one match in the ODI series against India, and the T20 series ended in a 2-2 draw. Moreover, a five-match T20 series ending 2-2 also indicates that one match produced no result. In such a scenario, using limited-overs performance as the basis for Test preparation is a weak argument from an analytical standpoint. West Indies currently sits eighth in Test cricket. In the current cycle, the team has recorded only two wins in 12 matches. In each of the previous two cycles as well, the team finished eighth. This is not a slump but a persistent structural position. In this backdrop, Sammy's goal of reaching the top five seems highly ambitious, especially when the series is only two Tests and a single no-result match could derail the entire plan. Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium is known for its slow pitch and spin bowling. Due to post-monsoon moisture in late October, the pitch may offer some early help, but as the match progresses, it will dry out and become more favourable to spinners. West Indies' pace attack is generally built on bounce and aggression, which Mirpur's conditions can blunt. This is why Bangladesh's spin bowling could play a decisive role in this series. Notably, Bangladesh has won three of six matches in the current World Test Championship and remains in contention for the final. Bangladesh looks stronger in home conditions, and Test cricket on Asian soil has always been challenging for West Indies. So Sammy's team faces not just Bangladesh but also the challenge of pitch and weather. West Indies may also face criticism regarding preparation. The team held a camp in Chennai and played only a two-day practice match after arriving in Bangladesh. While Chennai's weather and pitch conditions may bear some resemblance to Mirpur, a single week and a two-day warm-up match are not considered sufficient for red-ball Test cricket. Test cricket in the subcontinent usually requires one or two four-day practice matches so that batsmen can get used to playing long innings against spin and bowlers can prepare for long spells. Sammy spoke very little about technical aspects in the press conference. His focus remained on pay cuts, players' emotions, team unity and prize money. However, he also said that the team will respect the opposition, analyse them and make plans to win. But there were no clear signals on the nature of the pitch, the strategy for batting against spin, bowlers' workloads or the fourth-innings plan. This is a concern for a team that has publicly claimed it will win both Tests. The pay cut issue could also create divisions within the team. While established players with franchise league earnings can absorb the cut more easily, players on limited contracts and domestic cricketers may feel its impact more. Sammy has denied it will affect the dressing room, but in practice such asymmetry can weaken team unity. On the other hand, Sammy presented the limited-overs series against India as evidence that the team can fight in difficult conditions. He said the white-ball team performed very well against India and he hopes the red-ball team will do the same in Bangladesh. But cricket analysts believe the demands of T20 and Test cricket are different. Test batting on Mirpur's slow pitch requires patience, defensive technique and the ability to survive long periods against spin, which does not come directly from T20's aggressive batting. Another major risk for West Indies is the weather. In Dhaka, heat and humidity after the monsoon keep rain chances alive. Since the series is only two Tests, if even one match is drawn due to rain, Sammy's goal of winning both will become mathematically difficult. In such a scenario, the toss could also prove decisive, as there will be less room for correction without a third match. Overall, West Indies' strategy appears emotionally strong and economically motivated, but technically and situationally it is not clear how the team will beat Bangladesh in both Tests in Mirpur's spin-friendly conditions. The first Test begins on 28 October in Mirpur, and only then will it be clear how well Sammy's words translate on the ground.
