Ishan Kishan Breaks Suryakumar Yadav's Record for Most T20 Runs by an Indian in a Calendar Year
Ishan Kishan has broken the record for the most T20 runs by an Indian batter in a calendar year. He now has 1,220 runs to his name, which is 56 more than Suryakumar Yadav's previous Indian mark of 1,164 runs, set in 2026. In the same stretch he also became the third-fastest Indian to reach 2,000 T20 runs. Two major milestones in one spell make this the standout individual performance by an Indian batter in the current calendar year.
On the global list, Kishan sits second. The world record for most T20 runs in a calendar year belongs to Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan, who made 1,326 runs. Kishan finished 106 runs short of that mark, but he did overtake Suryakumar Yadav's 2026 Indian record of 1,164 runs. First among Indians, second in the world — both positions were settled during the same innings.
The record was built on an innings in which Kishan made 61 off 32 balls against New Zealand in a recently played T20 fixture. His knock included five fours and five sixes. The aggression is easy to quantify: he collected 50 of those runs off just 10 deliveries through boundaries. The innings was not only useful for the team but decisive for his personal numbers.
The arithmetic of the knock is straightforward: five fours make 20 runs and five sixes make 30, so 50 runs came purely from boundaries. The remaining 11 runs came off the other 22 deliveries. Sixty-one off 32 balls works out to a strike rate of 190.62. Batting at that tempo shows he never allowed the bowlers to settle and did not let the scoring rate dip through the middle overs.
During the same innings, Kishan also completed 2,000 T20 runs. He reached the mark in 1,345 balls, the third-fastest by an Indian batter. Abhishek Sharma tops that list, having needed only 1,024 balls for his 2,000 T20 runs — a strike rate of roughly 195. Kishan's strike rate at that point was around 149, which makes him less explosive than Abhishek but consistently quick.
One important detail about the numbers needs to be understood here. Two thousand T20 runs for India does not mean runs scored only in international T20 matches for the national side. The figure covers all T20 cricket played by an Indian batter — the IPL, domestic T20 tournaments and international T20s combined. Similarly, the 1,220 runs for the calendar year are built across every format of T20 cricket, exactly as Rizwan's world-record 1,326 was. Count only international T20s and the picture changes completely.
Kishan comes from Jharkhand and is a left-handed opening batter who also keeps wicket. He entered T20 international cricket in 2026 and was identified early as an aggressive stroke-maker. Regular opportunities in domestic cricket and franchise T20 gave him the volume of matches needed to build a run tally of this size in a single calendar year.
Scoring more than 1,200 T20 runs in a calendar year is a significant achievement in Indian cricket. India has a long IPL season every year, plus domestic tournaments and international series, so the volume of matches available is very high. But getting opportunities and converting them consistently are two different things. For Kishan, this record is evidence that he has got here not through a handful of good innings but through sustained output across the year.
A note of caution is warranted. The exact calendar year and the specific match in which this record was set should be confirmed against the official scorecard and a statistical database. Calendar-year records change over time, so the date, venue and match number should be verified before publication.
For now, the numbers say this: 1,220 runs, an Indian record, second in the world, and the third-fastest Indian to 2,000 T20 runs. This has been the most productive year of Kishan's career so far. The bigger test will be how long he sustains this run, and whether Rizwan's world record of 1,326 comes within reach.
